Just Three Minutes

This is my 200th post. I finally got around to watching Oprah's show about child predators and I was disgusted. I was bawling and felt like throwing up at the same time. Many bloggers I know are either shutting down, or going private because of this particular show in an effort to protect their children and the privacy of their family. Short of doing that what can we do to protect our children?

We have to act fast! First, if you did not see this show, watch it here. Congress is voting on Bill 1738—The PROTECT Our Children Act, (which is sponsored by the Vice Presidential candidate Joe Biden) THIS WEEK, before they go on hiatus, so go NOW to this page and follow the directions to send a letter (it's already written for you) to your Senators. It's fast and easy. I sent one to both of Senators in under 3 minutes.

In a nutshell the PROTECT our children act will: (credit to the Oprah show website)

  • Authorize over $320 million over the next five years in desperately needed funding for law enforcement to investigate child exploitation.
  • Mandate that child rescue be a top priority for law enforcement receiving federal funding.
  • Allocate funds for high-tech computer software that can track down Internet predators.

If you saw what I saw on that show, you would not hesitate to do this.....I won't even describe it here......it was THAT bad. Please do it for our children, our nieces and nephews, our neighbor's children , and for those babies that are being abused before they even have a chance talk and tell us that someone is hurting them. Please. It will only take three minutes of your time...but give those children a new lease on life.

That show was absolutley disgusting and eye-opening...I am looking into the Canada-side action I can take for sure. These monsters need to be stopped.

I didn't see it but I heard about it. So scary and disturbing! I emailed both of my senators...you were right it only took 3 minutes.

I'm glad I missed it but I will check out the sites you posted!

I didn't see it, probably don't want to, but I've been a bit more discretionary as to what pictures of my son I post on my blog anymore. I'll definitely send that letter.

(as a side note, I used to have pictures of my son's feet posted on flickr [you know, the cutesie little artistic type], but I made them private after they were getting exponentially more page views than any of my other pictures. There are some f*cking weirdo's out there.)

I'm lucky in that my "children" are all adults and I don't have to worry about their safety...not that I posted that many pictures of them, anyway.

BTW, love the new picture at the top of your blog!

I have to be honest, I'm glad I missed it.

I contacted both of my Senators. It took NO TIME!

Everyone should be doing this!

Thanks!

I saw that show. It was disturbing to say the least. I've been thinking about the pervasiveness of the eroticization of those against their will--maybe because I saw Traffic not long ago. Seems like there are way, way, way more pervs out there than I both think there are or obviously there should be

I'm glad I didn't see the show. Being the mother of two young children, I'm especially sensitive to this kind of thing. I did contact both my senators, and I'm hoping that they will both follow through.

Also, the commenter who labeled feet pictures of her kids private on flickr made me pause. I have one of those on my flickr page and I'll be watching its stats. Right now, it's my most popular picture, but I submitted it to a contest and I think that's the main reason for the attention, right now. Creepy to think about, though.

Concerning flickr...that is one of the main reasons I went totally private and only my contacts that I approve can see my pictures. It was really just freaking me out that everyone and their mother's brother could see all my pictures. I went back through all my posts and removed some pictures from the early days too....

Done. Thanks for making us aware of this.

I didn't catch the show, but Greg saw parts of it on YouTube and told me about it afterwards. It sounded revolting and disturbing.

Congratulations on being such a proactive parent. Its a scary and dangerous world out there. I do not have any of my own children but I do have a beautiful baby niece who I love and want to protect.

Thank you for sharing!

Missed the show - actually, not so much that I missed it, I never watch Oprah. Gives me the creeps though just thinking about the subject.

I think your idea of watermarking all your photos is good, probably something I should do but have been too lazy.

I've never used a flickr account, but all my pics can be viewed on my blog anyway. I get some weird google searches that end up pointing to my blog, but so far, nothing too scary yet.
