Carie from Our Crooked Tree was the only one who guessed right regarding Jake's initial reaction to his first loose tooth! (sorry no prize, except 20 more years of friendship, lucky you!) It was an absolute nightmare.....
We had just finished lunch and I was cleaning up the dishes when Jake came running back into the kitchen half whining half crying that something was wrong with his tooth. I took a look, stuck my finger in, gave his bottom tooth a good wiggle and excitedly informed him that he had his first loose tooth. You would have thought I told the boy he couldn't play his Wii for the next gajillion years the way he reacted.
He immediately burst into tears. Dave and looked at each other, WTH??
Me/Dave: This is so exciting buddy! You are getting to be such a big boy!
Jake: I don't want to be a big boy!
Me/Dave: What's going on big guy, what's the matter?
Jake: I don't want to lose my teeth! I want to keep them forever! (still screaming and sobbing)
Me/Dave: Well, honey you are supposed to lose your baby teeth so your big grown-up teeth can come in, you know that. I bet some of your friends at school have already lost some of their teeth right?
Jake: But I love my baby teeth! If I don't take care of my teeth then they'll fall out and I won't have any teeth. (aha!)
Me/Dave: You DO take good care of your teeth, so that won't be a problem.
Jake: I'm keeping my mouth closed forever, so my teeth will never fall out. (do you promise?) (still sobbing, tears running down his face, snot pouring out his nose)
Me/Dave: But then the Tooth Fairy won't be able to come and visit you and leave you money for your tooth. We get to finally use that awesome tooth fairy pillow we won from SlackerMommy!
Jake: I don't want the tooth fairy to leave me anything!
Me/Dave: Now you are just talking crazy talk. You need to calm down, take a deep breath. It's going to be ok. Would you like to call A? Did you see that he lost his two bottom teeth the last time we saw him?
Jake: Mouth closed, shakes his head no, still crying.
Me/Dave: Do you want to call cousin L (who is Jake's authority on EVERYTHING) he's lost like 15 teeth. He can tell you everything there is to know about loose teeth.
Jake: Sobbing harder, shakes his head no.
Me/Dave: Should we call the Dr. Tom the dentist? He will tell you that everything is alright. We actually go to see him in a few weeks....
Jake: NO! He will be mad at me! (now crying even harder, I guess that was the wrong thing to say)
Me/Dave: Ok, Jake. You need to quit crying. blah blah blah (I don't even remember what we were pulling out of our butts to get him to quit crying, but we both ended up walking away and letting him settle down on his own. (The running dialogue in my head was saying, Dude. It's a freaking loose tooth. Deal with it. Quit with the crying already! But I didn't want to hurt his fragile male ego......nor did I want to be viewed as anything but the caring and gentle momma, but the time had come where he did need to just deal with it own his own.)
15 minutes later he FINALLY quits crying, his eyes are dryed, his nose is blowed, and he wants to see the fancy pillow that his tooth will go into. We then get hit with the real humdinger,
So what is the going rate for a first tooth these days? We were thinking something along the lines of 5 bucks, then a dollar for each tooth after....do molars deserve more?
***Just for clarification***, we are NOT giving the child 50 dollars for his tooth. NO FREAKING WAY! I think we have decided on $5.00 and $1.00 for each tooth after. We will have to decide on the molars later on.
We did already get Mario Kart for him....that had already been decided and reserved. He played ALL DAY on Sunday. :)

I think that sounds about right. It's been a couple of years since we've had a lost tooth though!
Who me? Yippee! I never win anything! It is so hard getting big; Daddy is still struggling with it. Glad he finally calmed down. I remember getting a quarter back in the day.
I love his negotiation! I wish the Tooth Fairy would bring me Mario Cart.
Seriously though, there is a series of books called "Parts" and "More Parts". They are funny stories about a boy trying to make sense of such things as losing teeth and what some sayings mean. Such as: I'm losing my mind does not really mean losing your brain. My kids love the books and they have helped with some of their anxieties.
Wow. Good to know the boy's priorities haven't changed in spite of the tooth. heehee.
BTW - Just ordered the Star Wars Wii game for Seth's birthday. Thought of you and Jake!
You HAVE to get him the book, Parts, by Tedd Arnold. It's all about how a kid thinks he's falling apart because of losing teeth, bellybutton lint, boogers, etc. It's hilarious and fun to read and I bet he'll love it!

I think your rates are fair, BTW. =)
Mario Kart Wii is awesome! I just played it tonight for the first time. It's quite a bit different than the Gamecube version, and I can see that the network play is going to be a real problem for me.
Between that and Guitar Here, which we finally got, my family is out some serious sleep.
BTW, the first 5 teeth or so were major ordeals with my oldest daughter. The first one was like we were trying to saw off a couple of major limbs or something. She was totally freaked and the tooth was barely connected.
My youngest was the opposite. Her first loose tooth wasn't even very lose and she was all "PULL IT OUT RIGHT NOW!"
She was actually very excited. Amazing how different each kid can be.
Oh my gosh! Fifty bucks is huge coin for a first tooth, but this is coming from someone who got a quarter for her first. I've sure got it coming...I think I'll start saving now or I'll go broke :)
WOW - the tooth fairy is pretty generous now a days!!!!! I am getting my 4 wisdon teeth out soon, wonder how much I will get for them???? I see a vacation on the Riverera in my near future!!!!
Oh my God! That is so funny! Monkey has not lost any teeth yet, but I would not be surprised if he reacts the same way. Who says boys can't be "drama queens".
Poor little guy. 5 bucks is good...then a buck for the future.
I'm thankful Trey lost his at school...they make it a big deal. put his picture on the wall...give them a treasure chest to bring it home in.
Is it sick that I've kept them all? What am I going to do w/them? Make an immunity necklace for surving parenthood i guess.
I'd go buy him mario kart;0
nice negotiation for a tooth..fifty bucks! I hope you don't me adding your link on my blogroll.I like readin your blog:)
Poor guy, so traumatic. I had a boy who was so upset about growing up as well.
We do a buck or two a tooth. There are a lot of flippin' teeth in this house and our oldest, at 13 is still losing teeth!
Thanks for book recommendations Kristi and Cyndy! I just got a borders coupon in my email and think I will head over there tonight!
I was a cheapskate. It was $1 a tooth, no matter what. And I feel you on the drama. That's why I am so, so grateful that my girl has lost the last of her baby teeth. Now I have braces to deal with.
I got a quarter!! Five bucks? I am sending you a tooth to cash in.
Ah, well when you think about it, it is a little scary to start losing your teeth. Good to hear he calmed down a bit.
I think your tooth fairy rates are definitely good!
I can be a seriously over organized freak sometimes. I began, with Mikaela's first tooth, putting each tooth in a zip bag with a post-it with date and position of tooth (lower right front, upper left eye, etc.).
Life takes over. Something has to give. At some point in time the post-it notes were not filled out as completely. So I'm left with zip bags with baby teeth, post it that has day and month but no year, etc.
Some zip bags just have a tooth - or two - with no post-it at all!
WTF was I planning to DO with those teeth anyway? Glue them in the proper order into some plastic skull or something!!??!!
My theory now? Keep the first, throw the rest away!
Tooth fairy often forgets to stop by our remote area - we blame it on not having enough teeth lost that day by kids in the area to warrent a trip. She'll sometimes remember a few days later.....
